I want to start off by tell you guys a little bit more about why I started Conductive Care. As a newly qualified Conductor going it alone to set up independently definitely wasn’t the “normal” thing to do.
However, I knew how passionate I was and that my beliefs about disability weren’t necessarily what was widely accepted within society, so for me starting my own business was the only way I could truly pursue this passion for helping other and getting the word of independence out there.
So, first off I should probably explain exactly why I’m so passionate about helping others….
Long before I began my degree, I worked with children with disabilities, actually for about 4 years and this was where it all started. During these years I met some amazing children! They were fun, full of life and knew exactly what they did and did not want to do! This was great! I encouraged their desires, thoughts and feelings and together we did the things they wanted, not what I or anyone else thought they wanted. Doing this filled me with joy because I knew these children were truly happy and complete.
Later I ended up at university completing my degree, where I learnt even more about what those amazing children were capable of. I learnt that we shouldn’t be focusing on what they can’t do, but instead on what they can do‼ We should be talking about their abilities not disabilities. We should be helping these amazing children become as independent as possible and helping them learn a ton of different independent skills, so that they can be in control of their own lives in the future.
Ability NOT Disability
Who says that just because you have been diagnosed with a disability that you will never have the abilities that other have, for example walking, sitting on a chair talking, rock climbing, skiing, the list is endless.
The only thing that is stopping those children from achieving those things is the attitude toward disability. So, let’s scrap the dis and focus on abilities, what you are already capable of and what you want to be capable of in the future. The only way we can help get you there is if you work to achieve the goals you have set. It is just like any other person.
Imagine I have a goal of being able to run a marathon, well I wont be able to achieve that if I sit at home and never go running. But if instead, I get up and go running, each day running a little bit further, I will eventually be able to run a marathon no problem. It might take a month, it might take 6 months, but it is possible. This is exactly the same for children with disabilities. Every child has the ability of reaching their goal, it will just take time, hard work and perseverance. There is no quick fix, but it is possible!
My goal as a rehabilitation specialist is to help as many children with physical disabilities as possible to become as independent as they can be. So far I have had the opportunity to work with so many amazing children, with different disabilities, at different levels of ability and every day I remind them that they can do it then they will achieve their goals! There will be bumps in the road, setbacks, and disappointments, but we will face them together and show everyone just how AWESOME these children are!
